Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance

Green Mondays / November 2, 2009 /  6 - 9pm

We invite you to join us in the gallery November 2, for the monthly Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance networking meeting and to experience our new space. As business owner of both jordan faye contemporary and Block Events, we advocate principles of sustainability. We foster values, which seem to be disregarded or forgotten in contemporary society. In an age of technology, everything is so fast-paced that we forget to slow down and appreciate the innate beauty of our surroundings. As artists we see differently. The quiet of nature, the joy of a dinner cooked and shared with friends, the savor of food grown locally, bought directly from the farmer, the intimacy of a space well appointed with furniture, art, light. We bring these things together in our new but very old library building, featuring contemporary art from primarily local, emerging artists, and events planned by conscious individuals who focus on green, local, and sustainable practices without sacrificing grace or beauty.

View the latest installation, ORBS, by James Long. Both lusterous and playful, James Long's work portrays influences of minimalism and craft. His most recent body of work involves explorations in solid wood of a simple shape: the orb. The subtle beauty in his work is seen through the sensual nature: both in form and finish. (Orb Exhibition extended through November 15). Hanging in the main gallery are new paintings by Treva Elwood, also on view thru November 15.

Taste delicious local and organic fare from Dionysus' Kitchen paired with wine from Black Ankle Vineyards.

Delight in seasonal creations from Local Color Flowers.

Enjoy the finest linens and other fun event rentals from Perfect Settings.

Listen to a panel, comprised of fashion designer/shop owner Shabdiece Esfahani from Di[e]ce, who's boutique specializes in eco-friendly and sustainable clothing lines, gallery owner Jordan Faye Block, and sculptor James Long, who will discuss the unique and different ways sustainability is being practiced in the arts community.

KATE MACKINNON

TIME FLIES :: TEN YEARS IN BALTIMORE

exhibition on view {petit galleries & drawing room}

One of our favorite painters, Kate MacKinnon, is leaving us in October for New York. Time Flies is her last exhibition while she is here. This retrospective of the past ten years of her creative life in Baltimore includes a preview of the first six paintings in The Grey Series. I hope that you will join us at the gallery to celebrate a decade of creative achievement.

a statement by the artist

My work tends to exist on the high end of the color key. The Grey Series began with a challenge to myself to limit my use of color. I spent some time thinking about work that inspired me that was also created with a limited palette. Barnett Newman's Stations of the Cross have long been personal icons for me. He created his series of 14 paintings over a periods of about eight years, letting each painting, inform the next. I thought this process was a very organic way to work, and also a real challenge to my control freak tendencies. As homage of sorts, I embarked on my own series of 14, emulating Newman's path. I had the hubris to jokingly state that I would finish them much quicker than he. Four years later, I am beginning number seven. The first was inspired by the gift of an orchid, the next by the first and so on. Number 14 looms somewhere in the near future as I work to complete the series by the end of this year. The paintings remain untitled until all are complete.

Kate MacKinnon came to Baltimore in 2000, to pursue her MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art. During her graduate studies, she began to experiment with materials and paint application. These explorations lead to an innovative and unique process that she continues to develop today.

16 paintings on view in the exhibition Time Flies extended until Sept 26. {See you soon!}

Friday's LIVE Section :: Baltimore Sun article by Tim Smith

Summertime gallery viewing

Diverting exhibits of contemporary art at Jordan Faye, Grimaldis galleries

"MacKinnon's newest project, the "Grey Series," is an impressive group with subtle variations of hue and design. There are six in the series so far, with another eight expected. "It's a loose homage to the 'Stations of the Cross' by Barnett Newman," the artist says, referring to the 14 black-and-white abstracts that secured Newman's stature in the early '60s."   ~ excerpt from Baltimore Sun article
