Biography

Melissa Matsuki Lillie is an emerging artist whose paintings reference natural and manmade forms using a personal visual language of vibrant colors and complex layers to reflect the macroscopic and microscopic world. Her paintings evoke a sense of space that has been flattened and layered, revealing strands and structures of line and color interacting fluidly with hidden landscapes. Elusive reference points can often be discerned through the interwoven layers. The viewer might glimpse an aerial photograph of altered landscapes such as quarries or planned parks, or the meandering line of a plant’s searching tendrils or stacked lines of sedentary rock that has been magnified to the point of abstraction.  In some cases, these references are so obscured by her laying process that we are left with only an echo of the original. In addition to painting she frequently works sculpturally, creating forms that celebrate both line and color.  The layering of line is apparent in these three dimensional works as well, as the lines weave through space and the viewer changes their vantage point.

Born in Maryland, Melissa attended the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.  She currently lives and works in North Adams, Massachusetts. Fluidity, Reveal is Ms. Matsuki Lillie’s first solo exhibition at jordan faye contemporary at case[werks].
